Nucleating agents in automotive applications

additives for automotive sectori

When it comes to plastics, every detail counts. Today, we’re diving into the fascinating world of nucleating agents, focusing on their transformative role in automotive applications. These additives might be small, but their impact is huge, enhancing efficiency, improving product properties, and paving the way for lighter, more sustainable vehicles.

What is a nucleating agent?

Think of a nucleating agent as a tiny catalyst that supercharges the crystallization process in semi-crystalline polymers like polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE). When these polymers cool, they form intricate crystalline structures known as spherulites. By fine-tuning the size and arrangement of these spherulites, nucleating agents unlock a range of enhanced properties:

  • transparency and surface gloss: reduced haze and improved clarity
  • mechanical strength: greater rigidity and tensile strength
  • thermal resistance: increased heat distortion and crystallization temperatures
  • processing efficiency: shorter cooling and molding cycles, saving time and costs

Whether it’s creating crystal-clear packaging or crafting durable automotive parts, nucleating agents help tailor the performance of plastics to meet specific functional needs.

Driving innovation: nucleating agents in automotive

The automotive industry is a hotbed of innovation, and nucleating agents are playing a starring role. From bumpers to fluid containers, these additives are transforming vehicle components by:

  • reducing costs: faster crystallization means more efficient production and less material waste
  • improving performance: higher stiffness and better impact resistance allow lighter, more durable parts
  • enabling material replacement: polyolefins like PP can replace heavier, costlier polymers, driving sustainability and affordability

Door panels, radiator shields, or battery cases, no matter what your product is: nucleating agents are at the heart of the shift toward lighter and more sustainable vehicles.

Solutions tailored for automotive applications

At Greenchemicals, we’re passionate about offering innovative solutions to meet industry challenges. Here are some of our standout nucleating agents:

  • GC HYDRO NUC 35 TC: A compact, eco-friendly foaming agent that doubles as a nucleating agent during direct expansion processes. Ideal for PS, PE, PP, PET, and PA, it delivers uniform cell structures with impressive mechanical properties.
  • STARCELL PS 60 U: A talc-based nucleating agent in a polystyrene matrix. Perfect for foams, it enhances stiffness and reduces weight in packaging and automotive components.
  • STARCELL PO 60: A polyethylene-based talc masterbatch designed to create fine, regular cell sizes. The talc used is characterized by an outstanding lamellar structure, excellent purity and high brightness.

Additionally, with the acquisition of Polichem we’ve widened our portfolio of nucleating agents with several products, such as:

  • AUSINYL DN PA – AUSINYL M-DN: effects the crystallization rate of POLYAMIDE compounds and leads to an efficient mould release. Compounding with AUSINYL ensures short cycle times, smooth polymer flow, and enhanced dimensional stability for injection-molded and extruded articles.
  • ALTER-PROC MF: dramatically effects the crystallization rate of PET/Glass Fibers compounds and leads to an efficient mould release. Compounding with ALTER-PROCMF ensures the same results of AUSINYL DN PA, plus an excellent HDT values of PET/GF compounds, up to 220°C-225°C.
  • PROCAPOL MB-LDN: it is empolyed in PP to improve the crystallization rate and lead to an efficient mould release. Compounding with PROCASTER MB-HDN ensures shorter cycle times, enhanced dimensional stability, and superior thermal and mechanical properties for injection-molded and extruded articles.
