GREENCHEMICALS IN THE EUROPEAN PROJECT “PLANETS”

Greenchemicals is proud to announce its participation in PLANETS, an ambitious European project dedicated to developing safer and more sustainable alternatives for plasticizers, flame retardants and surfactants. This project, funded by the Horizon Europe programme with a budget of €14.5 million, aims to validate the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) approach proposed by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.

As a member of the scientific committee, Greenchemicals will contribute its expertise in the formulation of polymer additives, focusing on halogen-free or low-halogen solutions for styrenic polymers used in the construction, electrical and electronics sectors.

As specialists in additives and flame retardants, we commit a lot of energy and resources to research and development processes to ensure that our customers receive products that are increasingly safe and less impactful to the environment,’ says CEO Micaela Lorenzi. ‘We are proud to be part of PLANETS and contribute to achieving common goals in economic, social and environmental sustainability.

The PLANETS project in detail

The PLANETS consortium is a true melting pot of expertise, with 18 European partners:

  • Industrial companies: BASF, Chemische Fabrik Budenheim KG, ELKEM Silicones, Steinbacher Dämmstoff, SYENSQO, Wacker Chemie AG, and Greenchemicals
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises: RINA Consulting, STERNA, QSAR Lab
  • Technology centres: AIMEN, CEA, TNO, IPC, Fraunhofer ICT
  • Non-profit organisations: BioNanoNet, University of Salzburg, Radboud University

Coordinated by the Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA), the project aims to:

  • Develop safe and sustainable alternatives through the SSbD framework;
  • Integrate new molecules into products such as coatings, insulation foams and childcare articles;
  • Evaluate the entire life cycle of the developed solutions and minimise their environmental impact.

The consortium’s first meeting was held in Grenoble at the end of November, marking the start of a journey that promises to transform the chemical industry’s approach to sustainability radically.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting journey towards green innovation!
